Those Who Work with Angels
I’ve shared my life with animals through good seasons and hard ones, and they’ve taught me more than most people.
We like to believe humans sit at the top of the intellectual and emotional pyramid, but I’m not so sure. Yes, we may have a greater capacity for conscious thought. Still, when it comes to awareness, loyalty, cooperation, resilience, and simple kindness—animals often seem to understand the “big picture” far better than we do.
They are also incredibly vulnerable. Their safety depends on the compassion of the beings around them, and far too often, they’re at the mercy of those who feel superior or wield power with an advantage beyond their reach.
I’m so grateful for the Whatcom Humane Society. Over the years, I’ve visited many times—usually because a lost animal found me and I wanted to get them to safety. They are busy people doing all they can with what they have to protect, advocate, heal, and provide second chances.
There are also many rescue organizations that I have worked with over the years that do extraordinary work. I think there is a special seat in “heaven” for the people who work so tirelessly in kindness for the creatures who fly, swim, run, walk, crawl, squirm, and hide all around us.
